Week 2- Introduction to Basic Composition

In week 2, Mr Martin taught the class about basic composition.

Focal Point - key element to a good composition // helps attract attention from viewers

Scale & Hierarchy - scale is used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements

Balancing the elements - asymmetrical balance by having a 'weight' to each element (eg: textured elements 'weigh' more than flat coloured elements)

White space- (Mr Martin: sometimes in design it's not just about showing, but also not showing) empty space to balance up the focal point // balancing out the busy parts of the composition to help the design to breathe

Rule of Third The process of dividing an imagine into thirds

Fig 1.1, Rule of Third grid

Fig 1.2, % of attention on each intersection

Golden Ratio a mathematical ratio // fosters organic & natural looking compositions // harmony & proportion // provides a sense of artistry

Fig 2.1, Golden Ratio

Week 3 - Lasso Tool, Pen Tool & Layering

Fig 3, Tool box

Mostly will use: pen tool, brush tool & lasso tool

Lasso Tool

Fig 4, Lasso tool

Polygonal lasso tool (left click / control + click on lasso tool --> select)

Fig 5, Polygonal lasso tool

Masking is only possible when the selection is in dotted lines.

Pen tool

Fig 7.2, Selection using pen tool

(when using the pen tool to select)
there no dotted lines so --> right click (while still using pen tool) --> make selection --> ok then masking

Magnetic lasso tool (right click on lasso tool)
Fig 8, Magnetic lasso tool

- Just trace along the image and click <delete> for undoing magnet
- Works well if there is a strong contrast between the object and the bg
- Click to change its path

Magic Wand (right click on selection tool)

Quick selection tool (right click on selection tool)

- Click and 'highlight' areas to select

After masking, we can ctrl c + ctrl v the layer to paste

Week 4 - Adjustment & Filter

Adjustment Layer- non-destructive image editing tools that add colours and tonal adjustments without changing its pixels (so you can edit and discard or restore the original image at any time)

Adjustments:
1. Brightness / Contrast - for adjusting the tonal range of the image. Brightness for adjusting highlights and contrast for adjusting shadows

2. Level - for modifying the tonal values by adjusting the levels of shadows, midtones, and highlights.

3. Curves - the most powerful and precise tool for editing tones. It lets you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of the image

4. Exposure - for exposure levels with 3 sliders (Exposure, Offset, Gamma). Exposure adjusts only highlights, Offset adjusts only the mid tones, and Gamma adjusts only the dark tones

5. Selective Colour - selective modifies the amount of a primary colour without modifying the other primary colours

When adding adjustments, a new layer will appear over the image and a 'Properties' panel specific to the type of adjustment selected will pop up.

Filter - to change colour add blue or create completely new image effects

Project 1A: Physical Collage

Materials

For this project, I have used materials from Harper's BAZAAR Malaysia magazine from the March 2022 issue. I have also printed some pictures from the internet for small details in the compositions.

Pre-Composition #1

Fig 17, Pre-composition #1, Week 2 (7/4/2022)

For this composition, I used the rule of third and made the hands the main subject. I surrounded the hands with flowers to make it stand out more.

Pre-Composition #2

Fig 18, Pre-composition #2, Week 3 (13/4/2022)

This composition allows your eye line to move from left to right to left to right as it down, giving it a zigzag outline.

Pre-Composition #3

Fig 19, Pre-composition #3, Week 3 (13/4/2022)

For this composition, I used the golden ratio. The main focus is on the models aligning the golden ratio.

Extra

Fig 20, Pre-composition #4, Week 3 (13/4/2022)

For this extra composition, I tried to put the pictures for a diagonal eye line from the bottom left to the top right.

Project 1B: Digital Collage

Materials

For this project, my classmates and I were given a handful of pictures through google drive (link in the instructions) to use. We had to remove the background of the picture in Photoshop by using either lasso tool, pen tool, or quick selection tool to use them for the collage.

3 || Feedback

Project 1A- Physical Collage

The votes from my classmates are almost evenly distributed for the 1st to 3rd composition. However, Mr  Martin advised to opt for either the 2nd or 3rd because the 1st composition is not as interesting as the other two.

Project 1B- Digital Collage

Mr Martin immediately decided on the 2nd composition. The 1st one might have been all over the place, and the 3rd one might have been too simple in my judgement.

4 || Reflection

I have always wanted to learn how to use Photoshop and have never gotten the chance to and this module allows just that. Sometimes, online materials are especially confusing for new users but the classes these past few weeks were easy to follow and were beginner friendly which I appreciate a lot. This module is a lot of fun so far, if not for the countless of problems I have to face because of blogger...

In regards to this project, I have never shown interest in collages especially because working on collages meant working with limited materials. However, this project made me realise how fun it is to compose collages with those limited materials. It is also fascinating how much potential can such limited materials have.
