Lecture 7 - Sense of Place

A designer's role is to solve problems with creative and effective visual communication
- personal goals
- community events
- corporate functions
- world changing projects
(like designing products, buildings, fashion, posters... everything around us)

Importance of observation:
How to "know" what imagery or content to include in the design?
- being attentive to your surrounding
- attention to details
- be analytical to details

Observing
- an active act of acquiring information, thru the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting
- helps designers see "problems" and get ideas for solutions to those problems

Visual Research

When I think of a sense of place, I think of a cozy closed space and Daisuke Richard's artworks come into mind. He likes to draw spaces cramped into something, which may not be many people's ideal sense of space, but somehow it is to me. I like being in enclosed and cozy spaces with everything I need within my reach.

Another example from @Lulu_785 on twitter gives me a sense of place as well, with everything of a person's interest or daily lives they have grown so used to represented in a small space.

I also really liked travelling, so the cozy 'home' inside of a travelling suitcase drawn by @evergreenqveen on twitter struck home in some sort of way.

For many people, home is the closest thing to having a sense of space and I am no different. I spend most my time at home in my room and it is the space I feel most comfortable in.

I wanted to show how the games I used to play in my childhood gave me a sense of place, so I had an idea to make the game 'flow out' of the screen to envelop me into it in some sort of way,

I thought of video games and my own room, which gave me an idea of how there are games where you have to decorate or build your own personalised room in a video game or online game. To combine the last two ideas together, I searched for inspiration of rooms in different games.

Second most to my home, as a teenager most people spend most time at school. Even though school does not exactly bring good memories because of all the tests and assignments, I grew very attached to my old classroom.

Following all those thoughts, I decided to make a list of places I like or resonate with a lot before starting on my sketches:
- airports / places that reminds me of travelling
- libraries / work cafes
- trains / public transport
- my high school's empty classroom
- previous house's shared bedroom

Idea Exploration / Sketches

Sense of Place

In my previous house when I was a very young child, my entire family shared the same bedroom and everyone slept on mattresses. These nights gave me a huge sense of security because I was surrounded by my family, so I wanted to draw it out.

I feel a sense of space in public transports, especially trains. I feel like I'm in my own little world with no worries with my earphones on because taking the train doesn't actually allow me to do anything very productive and I take advantage of that to have time for myself.

When the world is asleep at like 4am in the morning, I feel very safe and alone in my own workspace, so I wanted to show this sense of space in an idea.

I wanted to try draw out a small space in a library cubicle which got discarded halfway through but I wanted to show it nonetheless.

Week 10
("Cultural and Creative Industries in the Unequal World" talk by Dr Benny Lim)

Week 11
Dr Jinchi advised me to not go for isometric room designs because it doesn't exactly have that sense of place to them. They are just simply... rooms. She advised me to go for stuff like leaphere's illustrations and @evergreenqveen illustrations because they have a more surreal feel to them which still brings comfort.

4 || Reflection

Week 10
N/A

Week 11
Honestly, I encountered a huge art block when working on this project because of too many ideas but yet none of them seemed creative enough to produce a 'sense of place' in my opinion. I worked on Idea 1 and 2 swimmingly but after that I just couldn't come up with anything else. However, Idea 2 really stuck out to me and I am glad I ended up choosing it because I like the outcome and I feel like it represents my sense of place very well.
