Task 2: (A) Key Artwork & (B) Collateral

1 || Lectures

All lectures are done in Task 1: Exercise 1 & 2.

2 || Instructions

Task 2(A): Key Artwork

For task 2(A), we have to create a key artwork that represents or identifies us with our names or initials as letters and also an artwork. This will then be used in task 2(B) in collaterals.

Note:
- We can use our own initials, our first name or our pet's name.
- Focus on using black and white only for now.
- Use only very limited graphical elements.
- Can use any typeface for this task but we also need to modify it so that the outcome is distinct.
- Artboard can be of any size.
- Need to use Adobe Illustrator.
- Do a lot of explorations and compositions.

Inspiration & Sketches

My name is Foo Hui Xin but I am also known as Raemi (or, Rae) ever since I started to step out of my comfort zone and work. It felt like a bloom and I witnessed a lot of changes in myself as I kept forcing myself out of my comfort zone. Blooming reminded me of flowers, so my first batch of sketches were based off flowers.

For the 2 top left sketches, I was inspired by a game character's tattoos representing fireworks. Fireworks in Japanese is "花火 (Hanabi)" where "花(Hana)" means flowers.

Fig 1.2, Firework inspiration

For most of the sketches with the ae ligature, I was thinking of the flower plumeria.

Fig 1.3, Plumeria

For the middle top one, I was thinking of kind of creating a bell jar with the uppercase r and the lower case r.

Fig 1.4, Belljars inspo

Then, for the second batch of sketches, I was thinking of tattoos I would like with words in them. I have great interest towards tattoos so I explored this area. With words in tattoos, I would enclose them in a shape to make it kind of solid, thus the sketches.

Fig 2.1, 2nd batch of sketches, (8/10/2022)

The 2 on the left was a play on the letter r into making it a speech bubble to enclose the "ae" ligature that looks like a logo.

For the rest, even though the word "Raemi" isn't in Chinese letters, I wanted to try enclosing it like a Chinese seal.

Taking the feedback I have gotten into consideration, I thought long and hard of what my interests are and what I would like to do in the future. I am taking Entertainment design for my specialisation so it's no surprise my interest lies there. I would like to do something with medias like cinema or games.

Fig 3.1, 3rd batch of sketches, (8/10/2022)

I've taken inspiration from the classic pacman game for like 2 of the sketches because the pacman looks kind of like an "e" and the ghosts kind of looks like an "m".

Fig 3.2, Pacman inspo

The rest of the sketches were inspired by consoles like Nintendo and their button elements. The "ae" ligature are also tilted to represent the buttons on a console.

For the final batch of sketches, I finally gave up on trying to use my nickname and use the initials of my given name, "FHX". What I had in mind during this process was that I want to be involved in the media industry, like for games or movies. I mostly also thought of a logo easy to recognise and apply on products, and would look good for a studio production team.

While brainstorming and sketching, I was reminded of the logo from a survival horror game called "Dead by Daylight" developed by Behaviour Interactive.

In the end, I went along with my final idea of using a tally for my logo and using a brush tool to give it a horror vibe.

Digitalisation

I used different brush tools to create my key artwork. I also downloaded multiple brush sets from online.

I decided on the third (right) tool because it gave off a clean look while also giving the beginnings a slightly blotched start and the ends of the lines a rough edge like a clean brush stroke. I would like it imagine it as a tally traced with a finger coated in blood, though.

Task 2(B): Collateral (Part 1 - Animated Key Artwork)

First, I decided on the colour to use for my Key Artwork.

Fig 6, Colour exploration, (12/10/2022)

I was considering between bright pink and dark red. Bright pink blood was an inspiration from a game called "Danganronpa" where they coloured blood with bright pink instead of the typical dark red. I felt like pink would represent me more because, well, I like it. However, I went with dark red because I wanted to convey the fact that, hypothetically, if I had production studio, it would specialise in producing horror games. Red also obviously represents blood more.

Animation

I wanted the animation to represent the way a full tally is tallied and make it feel like blood is used to tally from the traced strokes.

Task 2(B): Collateral (Part 2 -  Collateral)

For this part of Task 2(B) where we have to make collaterals, I plan on making horror movie related merchandise as a production studio.

Sketches & Inspiration

In this made up scenario, my production studio produced a movie called "Tally" to match with the theme of my key artwork. For the movie screening, there will be movie posters and limited edition movie tickets. The limited edition movie tickets are inspired by limited edition movie tickets from a movie theatre called Megabox in South Korea.

I will also make a couple other collaterals like lanyards for staff and business cards for my production studio.

3 || Feedback

Week 6 General Feedback: The text has to represent us or what we like or what we want to be.
Specific Feedback: We have to think of a rationale for our design. For instance, if someone asks "why?", we have to have a justification for it. The bottom right design is most readable and clear.

Week 7 General Feedback: What we intend to convey through the key artwork should be what the audience would think of when they see it. Need to think of what we want to do in the future.

Specific Feedback: N/A (absent)

4 || Reflection

Experience
I has a difficult time with the process of making my key artwork because my thoughts were all over the place and I feel like I was looking at a scope too wide for my ideas. I spent most the time on this task on brainstorming and sketching for my key artwork. Honestly, I'm a little nervous about my final key artwork even though I feel like it represents me well because of what I would like to do most in the future, to be part of a team to develop a game be it horror or not. It was a bit pressuring for me to witness everyone being so... capable of the task.

Observation
Seeing other people's key artworks and collaterals was very eye-opening to me. I am amazed and nervous that I am surrounded by the people with such talent in this course.
In the beginning, I had no idea how collateral works, but through observation of other people's works, and a lot of online research, I am starting to understand it.

Findings
I realise that design is really just about visual communication through this task. The key artwork had to convey what I want to convey to the audience. I also learnt that I really had to think far ahead when doing the first step, like the key artwork and how it later can apply to products I want to create. I could not just base off my key artwork based on what I liked, I also had to take into consideration what I want to present to the public.

Design in Visual Communication
by Mustafa Günay

Instead of reading a book, I searched online for articles to understand visual communication better as this task is rooted in it.

"The concept of communication can be defined as an exchange of emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and information between two groups of people or people called senders and recipients. Therefore, visual communication is a social process."
