Task 3A
We had to use Fontlab to be able to use our fonts through typing. This
video was watched first before Fontlab7 Demo.
After receiving feedback, I've decided on the 5th sketch and made some changes accordingly.
I decided to go for idea 2 since it has more readability compared to idea 1.
This website breaks down typefaces and explains them really well. Andrea goes through everything very thoroughly which helped me understand letterforms better.

Task 3A- Type Design and Communication
We had to design the letters: a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .
Research
Mr Vinod has provided us with links we can take a look at in the
Typography Facebook group through the hashtag #fontdesign. With his
advice, I went through them as research and it helped tremendously.

Sketches
Following the video, I started on my sketches for type designs I
would like to do.

Deconstructing Letters
I deconstructed letters from a typeface, out of the 10 given
typefaces since the beginning of the semester, which I felt is
the most closest in similarity to the typeface I want to design.
The typeface I have chosen to deconstruct is Univers LT Std 55
Roman.

letter T for the cap line.

Extra letterforms
I made some extra letters to be able to play around with
typing them out after finishing the development of turning
them into fonts.

Developing Final Font
I could not access Fontlab 5 or 7 on my laptop so I had to
reside with Calligraphr. I have errors starting Fontlab up
and just could not launch it even though I have tried over
and over again, uninstalling and reinstalling it.
I had to first download the Calligraphr template pdf and
insert my fonts into it.
I had to put the hashtag in a section unrelated because there
was not an option for it...

3 || Feedback
Week 9
General Feedback:
The tool we use to sketch can determine how similar all our
sketched designs look (for example, using the same pen with
1 thickness)
Specific Feedback: I chose between 2 favourite
sketches (sketch 4 & 5) and Mr Vinod suggested to go for
sketch 5 but for my first typeface, I should avoid using
both filled and unfilled shapes so it should all remain
fully black if not it can look complicated.
Week 10
General Feedback: We have to watch and refer to the
videos on font design Mr Vinod uploaded on facebook to know
what we should do better.
Specific Feedback: Get rid of the line between the
comma, make the comma and full stop bigger and the dot on the
'i' bigger. So far it looks pretty consistent.
4 || Reflection
Experience
At first, this exercise looked intimidating and difficult,
so I was not looking forward to it, especially after seeing
the deconstruction of letterforms because it looked very
complicated. It felt like I had to work around so many rules
which felt somewhat suffocating.
However, when I got to the point where I am actually doing
the typeface in AI, It did not seem that bad. After
finishing the typeface and being able to type with it, it
felt very rewarding and it was really cool to be able to see
something I have designed used as a font.
Observation
Deconstructing letterforms is something no one regular would
ever think of while reading words. It's interesting how much
there is to a single letter. This kind of opened my eyes to
how much time and work it is put into something that seemed
so simple which is everywhere, and no one really notices
this.
Findings
I found out about how much patience and time and research
people put into designing a typeface. My typeface is far
from perfect, so it is very admirable that designers are
able to come up with good typeface designs and make it
legible and readable and also pleasant or interesting to
look at.
